BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-Nevis, June 23, 2026— The Traffic Department in Nevis is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Monday, June 22, 2026, at approximately 9:10 p.m., claiming the life of Mr. Keshawn Merchant, of Pond Hill, Gingerland, Nevis. This incident marks the first road fatality recorded in Nevis for 2026.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Merchant was riding motor scooter PB3431 from Pinney’s towards Charlestown along the Island Main Road. Upon reaching the vicinity of Old Hospital Road, he reportedly lost control of the scooter and collided with a concrete wall situated on the mountainside of the roadway.

Police officers responded to the scene and found Mr. Merchant lying motionless on the roadway. The scooter sustained extensive damage consistent with a high-impact collision.

Dr. Tivone Browne examined the body at the scene and pronounced Mr. Merchant deceased at approximately 9:36 p.m. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is aware of allegations circulating on social media suggesting that police officers or police vehicles were involved in the incident. Investigations conducted thus far have revealed no evidence to support these claims. Investigators have confirmed that no police vehicle was in the vicinity at the time of the collision. All police vehicles observed at the scene were responding units that arrived after the accident had occurred.

The Traffic Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and urges members of the public to refrain from speculation and the dissemination of unverified information while investigations remain ongoing.

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Merchant during this difficult time.
