At a sitting of the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court on April 15, 2025., presided over by Her Honour Rhonda Nisbett-Browne, a significant traffic-related conviction was handed down. Akil Clavier of Cayon, driver of a passenger bus, was convicted for the offence of Exceeding the Speed Limit committed on May 5, 2023., at Johnson Long Path. He was fined $3,000.00 to be paid within one (1) month, or face three (3) months’ imprisonment.

This conviction underscores a troubling and ongoing issue in our Federation—the growing prevalence of drivers exceeding the posted speed limits. Speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious road traffic accidents in St. Kitts and Nevis, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or loss of life. Too often, lives are changed forever in a matter of seconds due to a driver’s failure to observe basic road safety laws.

We take this opportunity to remind all motorists that speed limits are established to protect everyone—drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. The Traffic Department continues its efforts to enforce these laws through patrols, speed checks, and court prosecutions. We urge all road users to drive responsibly, observe posted speed limits, and remain vigilant at all times.

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force remains committed to promoting road safety and preserving life. Let this conviction serve as a clear message: reckless driving has consequences. Drive responsibly—because every life matters.
