Validity Of International Driver Licences In The Federation.

Car rental agencies are advised that “International Driver’s Licences” or International Driving Permits are not recognized as standalone authority to drive in St. Kitts and Nevis. Visitors who are not nationals are required, under the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, to obtain a Temporary Driver’s Licence before operating a motor vehicle in the Federation.

In order to obtain a Temporary Driver’s Licence, the applicant must first present a valid and unexpired foreign national driver’s licence issued by the competent authority in their country of origin. The temporary licence is issued locally upon completion of the prescribed process and payment of the applicable fee.

Exception – OECS Member States:

Non-nationals who hold a valid and unexpired driver’s licence issued by any member state of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are permitted to drive in St. Kitts and Nevis on that licence and are not required to obtain a Temporary Driver’s Licence.

Car rental agencies are expected to ensure that vehicles are only rented to persons who meet the above legal requirements. Agencies should verify that customers either possess a valid Temporary Driver’s Licence or qualify under the OECS exception prior to releasing any vehicle.

Please note that renting a vehicle to a person who does not meet the legal driving requirements may expose the agency to enforcement action and other legal consequences.

All agencies are requested to note the above and ensure strict compliance.
