Vehicle Inspection Requirements

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force advises all vehicle owners of the requirements for the external, non-mechanical aspects of vehicle inspections in the Federation.

All vehicle owners are encouraged to review these guidelines carefully to ensure their vehicles meet the required standards before submitting for inspection.

The requirements are as follows:

  1. Windshield Wipers and Horns
    • Windshield wipers must be fully operational to maintain visibility in inclement weather.
    • Horns must be audible and remain in their original condition as per the vehicle’s design. Alterations or variations in the sound are not permitted.
  2. Headlamps and Exterior Lighting
    • Both headlamps must be functional and correctly aligned. The use of colored lights is not permitted. Blue lights are strictly reserved for emergency vehicles.
    • All external lights, including brake lights, must be in good working order.
  3. Registration Plates
    • Plates must conform to the legal-size specifications and be securely mounted at the designated locations provided by the vehicle manufacturer or indicated on the vehicle registration document.
  4. Window and Windscreen Tinting
    • Tinting must not be less than 35% light transmittance. Notwithstanding this, the vehicle’s interior must be reasonably visible from the exterior.
    • No tint is permitted on the front windscreen beyond 10 inches from the top of the windscreen.
    • This regulation applies to all privately owned vehicles without exception, unless accompanied by an official exemption letter from the Commissioner of Police.

These requirements will be strictly enforced by all certified inspection agents to promote standardized inspections and prevent motorists from seeking inspectors with lenient practices. Compliance with these regulations will enhance road safety and regulatory compliance.

We thank all vehicle owners for their cooperation in making our roads safer.
